About Enbrel

Overview

Enbrel (etanercept) is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. It treats rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and plaque psoriasis in adults. In children, it treats polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis from age 2, and plaque psoriasis from age 4. It works by binding to TNF, a protein involved in inflammation, and blocking its activity.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects of Enbrel are infections and reactions at the injection site, each reported in more than 5% of patients. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop an infection. Enbrel should not be started during an active infection and should be stopped if an infection becomes serious. Other serious risks include new or worsening disorders that damage the protective covering of nerves, new or worsening heart failure, reactivation of hepatitis B, lupus-like syndrome and autoimmune hepatitis. Cases of lymphoma have been observed in patients receiving TNF-blocking medicines such as Enbrel. Contact your doctor if you develop symptoms of these conditions. People previously infected with hepatitis B need monitoring during treatment and for several months afterward. Seek immediate medical attention for a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, or symptoms of serious blood disorders such as pancytopenia or aplastic anemia, which involve low blood cell counts.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for a serious infection or severe illness while taking Enbrel. - Get immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction. - Seek immediate medical attention for symptoms of very low blood cell counts or failure of the bone marrow to make enough blood cells.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Enbrel if you have sepsis. Do not start treatment while you have an active infection. If an infection develops during treatment, it needs close monitoring; Enbrel should be stopped if the infection becomes serious. Conditions requiring caution include demyelinating disease (damage to the protective covering of nerves), congestive heart failure and previous hepatitis B infection. Demyelinating disease and heart failure may develop or worsen. People previously infected with hepatitis B need monitoring for reactivation during treatment and for several months afterwards. Serious fungal infections should be considered if severe illness develops, particularly in people who live in or travel to areas where these infections are common. Lymphoma has been reported in people receiving TNF-blocking medicines such as Enbrel. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of pancytopenia or aplastic anaemia (serious blood cell disorders) develop. Enbrel may need to be stopped. Anaphylaxis and other serious allergic reactions may occur. Enbrel should be stopped if a lupus-like syndrome or autoimmune hepatitis develops.

Interactions

Avoid live vaccines while using Enbrel. Tell your doctor if you take anakinra, which increases the risk of serious infection, or abatacept, which increases the risk of serious side effects, including infections, when used with Enbrel. Using cyclophosphamide with Enbrel is not recommended. Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Enbrel.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
