About Erelzi

Overview

Erelzi is a prescription medicine containing etanercept, a tumour necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. Etanercept is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and plaque psoriasis in adults. It is also used for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis in children aged 2 years and older, and plaque psoriasis in children aged 4 years and older. It works by blocking TNF, a protein involved in the body’s inflammatory response.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects are infections and reactions at the injection site. Serious side effects that need prompt medical attention include serious infections, new or worsening nerve disorders involving damage to the protective covering of nerves, new or worsening heart failure, reactivation of hepatitis B, lupus-like illness and autoimmune inflammation of the liver. Cases of lymphoma have been reported in people receiving TNF-blocking medicines such as etanercept. Severe blood disorders, including pancytopenia and aplastic anaemia, and serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of these conditions develop. Contact your doctor if an infection develops during treatment. Treatment should not begin during an active infection and must be stopped if an infection becomes serious.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Erelzi (etanercept) if you have sepsis. Treatment should not be started during an active infection. If an infection becomes serious during treatment, etanercept should be stopped. Tell your prescriber if you have a demyelinating disease, heart failure or a previous hepatitis B infection. New or worsening demyelinating disease and heart failure may occur. Previous hepatitis B infection requires monitoring for reactivation during treatment and for several months afterwards. Other important risks include invasive fungal infections, lymphoma, serious blood disorders and severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Tell your prescriber if you live in or have travelled to an area where fungal infections are common. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of a serious blood disorder develop. Treatment should be stopped if a lupus-like syndrome or autoimmune hepatitis develops.

Interactions

Avoid live vaccines while using etanercept. Tell your doctor if you take anakinra, which increases the risk of serious infection, or abatacept, which increases the risk of serious adverse effects, including infections. Using cyclophosphamide with etanercept is not recommended.
