About Fosrenol

Overview

Fosrenol contains lanthanum carbonate hydrate and is a phosphate binder. It is used to reduce phosphate levels in the blood in people with end-stage renal disease. It binds phosphate from food in the digestive tract, so less phosphate is absorbed into the body.

What it treats

- Elevated blood phosphate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Constipation, indigestion, allergic skin reactions and tooth injury while chewing the tablet have also been reported. Serious bowel problems have been reported, including blockage, reduced or stopped bowel movement, a hole in the stomach or bowel, and a hard mass of stool that cannot be passed. Contact a doctor immediately if you suspect a serious bowel problem. Risk factors include changes to the structure of the digestive tract, conditions that slow gut movement and other medicines taken at the same time. Chew or crush tablets completely.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for severe abdominal pain, severe vomiting or severe constipation.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Fosrenol if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or if you have a bowel obstruction, ileus (when the bowel stops moving normally), or fecal impaction (a mass of stool stuck in the bowel). Serious bowel problems, including blockages and perforation (a hole in the stomach or bowel), have been reported. Extra caution is needed if you have changes to the structure of your digestive tract, a condition that slows movement through your stomach or bowel, or take other medicines that may increase these risks. Chew or crush tablets completely. Tell the healthcare professional performing an abdominal X-ray that you take Fosrenol, as it can appear on the image like an imaging agent.

Interactions

Fosrenol can reduce the absorption of some medicines taken by mouth. Tell your doctor about your other medicines, especially: • Oral quinolone antibiotics: take these at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after Fosrenol. • Thyroid hormone replacement: do not take it within 2 hours before or after Fosrenol. Monitoring of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels is recommended when both are used. • Medicines that bind to aluminium-, magnesium- or calcium-based antacids: do not take these within 2 hours before or after Fosrenol. Other oral medicines may also need to be taken at separate times if reduced absorption could affect their safety or effectiveness. Ask your doctor which medicines need separating from Fosrenol.

Storage
