About Velphoro
Overview
Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is a phosphate binder supplied as chewable tablets. It is used to control blood phosphorus levels in adults and children aged 9 years and older with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It binds phosphate from food in the digestive tract so that it passes out in the stool, reducing the amount absorbed into the body.

Side effects
The most common side effects of Velphoro chewable tablets in clinical trials were discoloured stools (12%) and diarrhoea (6%). Tell your doctor if you have peritonitis during peritoneal dialysis, a significant stomach or liver disorder, recent major gastrointestinal surgery, or haemochromatosis or another condition that causes iron to build up in the body. People with these conditions were not included in clinical studies. Your doctor should monitor the treatment’s effect and your body’s iron balance.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for Velphoro. Caution and monitoring are needed in people with peritonitis during peritoneal dialysis, significant stomach or liver disorders, recent major gastrointestinal surgery, or a history of hemochromatosis or other conditions that cause iron to build up. These patients were not included in clinical studies. The prescriber should monitor the medicine’s effect and the body’s iron balance.
Interactions
Doxycycline, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and cephalexin should be taken at least 1 hour before Velphoro. Levothyroxine should be taken at least 4 hours before Velphoro. Tell your doctor about any other medicines you take by mouth. For most other oral medicines, there are no data on how to avoid interactions with Velphoro. If reduced absorption could affect a medicine’s safety or effectiveness, your doctor may recommend separating it from Velphoro. The interval depends on the medicine. Your doctor may also monitor how well the medicine works or check its blood levels, particularly if small changes in those levels could affect safety or effectiveness.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
