FDA boxed warningSerious psychiatric and behavioral reactions
Serious or life-threatening psychiatric and behavioral adverse reactions including aggression, hostility, irritability, anger, and homicidal ideation and threats have been reported in patients taking FYCOMPA.
These reactions occurred in patients with and without prior psychiatric history, prior aggressive behavior, or concomitant use of medications associated with hostility and aggression.
Advise patients and caregivers to contact a healthcare provider immediately if any of these reactions or changes in mood, behavior, or personality that are not typical for the patient are observed while taking FYCOMPA or after discontinuing FYCOMPA.
Closely monitor patients particularly during the titration period and at higher doses.
FYCOMPA should be reduced if these symptoms occur and should be discontinued immediately if symptoms are severe or are worsening.
Monitor patients for these reactions as well as for changes in mood, behavior, or personality that are not typical for the patient, particularly during the titration period and at higher doses
About Fycompa
Overview
Fycompa tablets contain perampanel, a medicine for epilepsy. It treats partial-onset seizures, including those that spread to involve both sides of the brain, in people aged 4 years and older. It is also used alongside other epilepsy medicines to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in people aged 12 years and older. It works by blocking AMPA receptors, which receive signals from the chemical messenger glutamate.
What it treats
- Partial-onset seizures, with or without seizures that become generalized, in people with epilepsy aged 4 years and older. - Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in people with epilepsy aged 12 years and older, used alongside other seizure medicines.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, irritability, falls, nausea, weight gain, a spinning sensation (vertigo), problems with coordination, headache, vomiting, bruising, abdominal pain and anxiety. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Contact a doctor promptly for serious changes in mood or behaviour, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, problems with walking, or falls and injuries. Seek urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction called DRESS (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms), which can affect multiple organs. Stopping Fycompa may increase seizure frequency in people with epilepsy. Discuss stopping treatment with your prescriber.

Before taking this medicine
The supplied FDA label lists no contraindications for Fycompa. Caution is needed because suicidal thoughts or behavior, dizziness, difficulty walking, sleepiness, fatigue, falls and injuries may occur. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. A serious drug reaction called DRESS, which can affect multiple organs, requires stopping Fycompa if no other cause is identified. Stopping treatment in people with epilepsy may increase seizure frequency. Fycompa may harm an unborn baby, based on animal studies.
Interactions
Fycompa may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives containing levonorgestrel. Tell your doctor if you use one. Medicines such as carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine and phenytoin can lower perampanel levels in the blood. Your doctor should monitor you closely when these medicines are started or stopped and may need to adjust your Fycompa treatment.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
