About HepaGam B

Overview

HepaGam B contains human hepatitis B immune globulin, a preparation of antibodies made from donated human plasma. It is used to prevent hepatitis B from returning after liver transplantation in patients who test positive for hepatitis B surface antigen. It is also used to help prevent infection after exposure to hepatitis B through infected blood, birth to an infected mother, sexual contact with an infected person, or household contact with someone with acute hepatitis B. It works by supplying antibodies that bind to the virus’s surface antigen, reducing the risk of infection.

What it treats

- Prevention of hepatitis B recurrence after liver transplantation in patients who test positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). - Prevention of hepatitis B after exposure to blood containing HBsAg. - Prevention of hepatitis B in infants born to HBsAg-positive mothers. - Prevention of hepatitis B after sexual contact with an HBsAg-positive person. - Prevention of hepatitis B after household exposure to someone with acute hepatitis B infection.

Safety information

Side effects

Low blood pressure and nausea were the only side effects observed in clinical trials, reported in 2% of participants. Serious risks listed in the label include allergic reactions, infusion reactions and blood clots. Contact a doctor promptly if you suspect any of these reactions. The label also includes warnings about transmissible infections, blood-clotting disorders and interference with blood glucose testing.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately if you develop low blood pressure.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not receive HepaGam B if you have had an anaphylactic or other severe whole-body reaction to injected human immune globulin products. Tell your prescriber if you have IgA deficiency, as you may develop antibodies to IgA and have a severe allergic-type reaction. HepaGam B contains a small amount of IgA. For prevention after exposure, HepaGam B must be injected into a muscle. If you have a severely low platelet count or a blood-clotting disorder that makes muscle injections unsafe, it should be given only if the expected benefits outweigh the risks. The label also warns about infusion reactions, blood clots, possible transmission of infectious agents, and interference with blood glucose testing. Monitoring of hepatitis B surface antibody levels may be needed. There are no human or animal data on use during pregnancy; use only if clearly needed. Caution is advised during breastfeeding.

Interactions

HepaGam B may reduce the effectiveness of live attenuated virus vaccines, and repeat vaccination may be needed. Tell your doctor about any recent or planned vaccinations. Antibodies in HepaGam B may interfere with some blood tests that check for antibodies. Its maltose content may also interfere with blood glucose testing systems that are not glucose-specific. Tell your doctor or testing team that you have received HepaGam B before these tests.

Storage

Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
