About Kerendia
Overview
Kerendia contains finerenone, a medicine called a nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist. It is used in adults with chronic kidney disease associated with type 2 diabetes to reduce the risk of worsening kidney function, kidney failure, cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack and hospital admission for heart failure. It is also used in adults with heart failure and a left ventricular ejection fraction of at least 40% to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospital admission for heart failure and urgent heart failure visits. It works by blocking mineralocorticoid receptors, whose overactivation is thought to contribute to inflammation and scarring in tissues such as the kidneys, heart and blood vessels.
What it treats
- Chronic kidney disease associated with type 2 diabetes in adults: to reduce the risk of sustained kidney function decline, kidney failure, cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack and hospitalisation for heart failure. - Heart failure in adults with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 40% or higher: to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalisation for heart failure and urgent heart failure visits.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), low blood pressure (hypotension) and low blood sodium (hyponatremia). High blood potassium can be serious and warrants contacting your doctor. The risk is higher in people with reduced kidney function or higher potassium levels before treatment. Worsening kidney function in people with heart failure also warrants contacting a doctor. Your doctor will monitor blood potassium and kidney function and may adjust treatment as needed.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Kerendia if you are allergic to finerenone or any other ingredient, have adrenal insufficiency, or take medicines known as strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. Kerendia can cause high blood potassium. The risk is greater if you have reduced kidney function or already have higher potassium levels. Your prescriber should monitor your blood potassium and adjust treatment as needed. Kidney function may worsen in people with heart failure. Your prescriber should check kidney function using eGFR and adjust treatment as needed. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Kerendia.
Interactions
Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking Kerendia. Kerendia must not be taken with medicines that strongly block the enzyme CYP3A4 (strong CYP3A4 inhibitors). Medicines that strongly or moderately increase this enzyme’s activity (CYP3A4 inducers) should also be avoided. Ask your doctor to check whether any of your medicines fall into these groups. Medicines that moderately or weakly block CYP3A4 require blood potassium monitoring when either medicine is started or its dose changes. Your doctor may need to adjust your Kerendia treatment.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
