About Lasix
Overview
Lasix is a prescription medicine containing furosemide. It treats fluid buildup (edema) linked to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome, in adults and children. It can also treat high blood pressure in adults, alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Furosemide is a diuretic, meaning it helps the body remove excess fluid through urine.
What it treats
- Fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome, in adults and children. - High blood pressure (hypertension) in adults, alone or with other blood pressure medicines.
Safety information
Side effects
Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tingling, muscle spasms and weakness. Rash, itching and sensitivity to sunlight may also occur. The label does not state how often these effects occur. Blood pressure may fall when standing up. Alcohol, barbiturates and narcotic medicines can worsen this effect. Furosemide may also increase blood sugar, uric acid, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Serious side effects include severe allergic reactions with shock, severe skin reactions such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, inflammation of the pancreas, kidney inflammation, blood vessel inflammation and serious blood cell disorders. Contact a doctor immediately for severe or blistering skin reactions, and seek emergency medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Contact a doctor promptly for ringing in the ears, hearing changes, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or reduced urine output. Hearing loss can be permanent. In people with impaired liver function, serious changes in brain function can occur; fluid and electrolyte changes in people with cirrhosis may trigger liver-related coma. Contact your prescriber if side effects are moderate or severe, as treatment may need to be changed or stopped.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Lasix (furosemide) if you cannot produce urine (anuria) or have previously had an allergic reaction to furosemide. Treatment should not begin during hepatic coma or while body salts (electrolytes) are depleted, until the underlying condition has improved. If you have liver cirrhosis with fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites), treatment is best started in hospital. Close monitoring is needed because sudden changes in fluid and electrolyte balance can trigger hepatic coma. In severe, worsening kidney disease, treatment should be stopped if waste products in the blood increase and urine output falls. Ringing in the ears and temporary or permanent hearing loss, including deafness, have been reported. Extra caution is needed with severe kidney impairment, low blood protein levels, higher-than-recommended doses, or use alongside aminoglycoside antibiotics, ethacrynic acid or other medicines that can damage hearing.
