About Mesnex
Overview
Mesnex contains mesna and is given by injection into a vein. It is used to reduce the risk of bleeding and inflammation of the bladder caused by ifosfamide treatment. Mesna binds to harmful breakdown products of ifosfamide, making them less harmful to the bladder. It is not indicated to reduce blood in the urine caused by other conditions, such as a low platelet count.
What it treats
Used to reduce the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis (bladder inflammation with bleeding) caused by ifosfamide. It is not indicated to reduce the risk of blood in the urine caused by other conditions, such as a low platelet count.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects when Mesnex is given with ifosfamide include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, tiredness, weakness, fever, headache, hair loss and sleepiness. Low white blood cell counts, low platelet counts and anaemia are also common. Contact a doctor immediately if an allergic reaction or skin reaction occurs. Reported reactions include anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, as well as rash, hives and swelling beneath the skin. Serious skin reactions include rash with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) and symptoms affecting other parts of the body, Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. These reactions require Mesnex to be stopped and supportive care provided. The preservative benzyl alcohol has been associated with serious adverse reactions and death in newborn and premature infants. Mesnex should be avoided in newborn, premature and low-birth-weight infants.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Mesnex if you are allergic to mesna or any of its ingredients, including benzyl alcohol. Avoid use in newborns, premature infants and infants with low birth weight because benzyl alcohol has been linked to serious reactions and death. Mesnex can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and serious skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and rash with increased eosinophils and symptoms affecting other organs. Patients should be monitored. If a reaction occurs, Mesnex should be stopped and supportive care provided. During pregnancy, use only if clearly needed. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Prescribers should exercise caution when selecting treatment doses for older adults. Mesnex may cause false-positive urine ketone tests and interfere with certain tests for creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activity.
