About Namenda

Overview

Namenda contains memantine, a medicine used to treat moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. It is thought to work by blocking certain brain receptors called NMDA receptors, which are activated by the chemical messenger glutamate. There is no evidence that memantine prevents or slows the loss of nerve cells in Alzheimer’s disease.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects of memantine are dizziness, headache, confusion and constipation. Other reported side effects include tiredness, pain, back pain, high blood pressure, vomiting, sleepiness, hallucinations, cough and shortness of breath. Serious problems that warrant prompt medical attention include seizures, which occurred in clinical trials, and the following reactions reported after approval: • Blood disorders, including low white blood cells, low platelets, reductions in several types of blood cells, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, a disorder involving blood clots and low platelets. • Congestive heart failure. • Inflammation of the pancreas or liver. • Suicidal thoughts. • Acute kidney failure or reduced kidney function. • Stevens–Johnson syndrome, a serious skin reaction. For reactions reported after approval, the frequency is unknown, and a causal link to memantine has not always been established. Memantine has not been systematically studied in people with seizure disorders.

When to call your doctor

Get medical help immediately if you have: - Thoughts of suicide. - A seizure. - Shortness of breath. - Hallucinations, such as seeing or hearing things that are not there.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Namenda if you have a known allergy to memantine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in the tablets. Caution is needed if you have a condition that makes your urine less acidic (raises urine pH). This can reduce the amount of memantine cleared through the urine and increase its level in the blood.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take sodium bicarbonate or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. These medicines can make urine less acidic, slowing the removal of memantine from the body and potentially increasing side effects. Diet can also affect urine acidity, as can conditions such as renal tubular acidosis or severe urinary tract infections. Also tell your doctor if you take amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan. Combining memantine with these medicines has not been systematically studied and requires caution.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
