About Naropin
Overview
Naropin contains ropivacaine hydrochloride, an amide local anesthetic. It is used in adults to numb an area of the body for surgery, including cesarean section, and to manage acute pain, such as pain after surgery or during labor. It works by blocking nerve signals, including those that carry pain sensations.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported with Naropin include low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, a slow heartbeat, fever, pain, back pain, headache, itching and tingling or pins and needles. Anemia and complications after surgery were also commonly reported. Other reported effects include dizziness, chills, difficulty passing urine, reduced sensation, anxiety, high blood pressure and a fast heartbeat. Seek immediate medical help for serious reactions such as seizures, loss of consciousness, chest pain, difficulty breathing or an irregular heartbeat. Serious events reported in clinical studies include heart attack, coma and blood clots in the legs or lungs. Toxic reactions, including those caused by accidental injection into a blood vessel, can lead to cardiac arrest and death. The label also warns about methemoglobinemia. Infusion into a joint can cause cartilage damage; Naropin is not approved for this use.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Naropin must not be used in anyone with a known allergy to ropivacaine or any other amide-type local anaesthetic. Serious toxicity, inadequate breathing or altered sensitivity require prompt medical management because they may lead to excess acid in the blood, cardiac arrest or death. Accidental injection into a vein during a nerve block can cause an abnormal heart rhythm or cardiac arrest. Naropin is not approved for continuous infusion into a joint, as this can cause cartilage breakdown. Methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder that reduces oxygen delivery, may also occur.
Interactions
Naropin can interact with other medicines. Tell your doctor if you use: • Other local anesthetics or medicines structurally related to amide-type local anesthetics, as their toxic effects can add together. • Fluvoxamine or other strong CYP1A2 inhibitors, which can increase ropivacaine levels in the blood. Theophylline and imipramine may also interact. • Ketoconazole, which can slow the clearance of ropivacaine from the body. • Class III medicines for irregular heart rhythms, such as amiodarone. Caution is advised, although specific interaction trials have not been performed. Some medicines can increase the risk of methemoglobinemia when used with Naropin. Examples include nitrates and nitrites such as nitroglycerin; other local anesthetics such as lidocaine and benzocaine; certain cancer medicines such as cyclophosphamide and hydroxyurea; antibiotics such as dapsone, nitrofurantoin and sulfonamides; chloroquine and primaquine; phenobarbital, phenytoin and sodium valproate; and acetaminophen, metoclopramide, quinine and sulfasalazine.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
