About PARSABIV

Overview

PARSABIV (etelcalcetide) is a medicine supplied in a vial for injection into a vein. It treats secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease who are on hemodialysis. It works by making calcium-sensing receptors on the parathyroid glands more sensitive to calcium, reducing the release of parathyroid hormone.

Side effects

Common side effects of PARSABIV include low blood calcium, muscle spasms, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and tingling or prickling sensations. Low blood calcium can be severe. Contact a healthcare provider if you develop tingling, muscle pain or spasms. Severe low calcium can cause seizures and serious heart rhythm problems, including QT prolongation and abnormal rhythms in the lower chambers of the heart. Seek urgent medical help for seizures or suspected heart rhythm problems. Other serious risks include worsening heart failure and bleeding in the upper digestive tract. Contact a doctor promptly if you notice worsening heart failure symptoms or suspect bleeding. People at risk of heart rhythm problems, seizures or upper digestive tract bleeding may need closer monitoring. Persistently suppressed parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels can lead to adynamic bone, a condition in which bone turnover becomes too low. Your prescriber may need to reduce or stop treatment if PTH falls below the recommended target range.

- Seek medical attention immediately for numbness or tingling, muscle pain, or muscle spasms. - Seek medical attention immediately for a seizure or an irregular heartbeat.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use PARSABIV if you have a known allergy to etelcalcetide or any of its other ingredients. PARSABIV is not recommended while breastfeeding. PARSABIV can cause low blood calcium, which can sometimes be severe. This may cause tingling, muscle pain or spasms, seizures, and serious heart rhythm problems. Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms occur. People at risk of QT interval prolongation, abnormal heart rhythms arising in the ventricles, or seizures need close monitoring. Close monitoring is also needed for worsening heart failure and for people with risk factors for upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Suspected bleeding needs prompt assessment and treatment. Persistently low parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels can lead to abnormally low bone turnover; if PTH falls below the recommended target range, the prescriber may need to reduce or stop treatment.
