About Persantine
Overview
Persantine contains dipyridamole, a prescription medicine that reduces platelet clumping. It is used alongside coumarin anticoagulants to help prevent blood clot complications after heart valve replacement surgery. It works by increasing the activity of adenosine, a substance that helps keep platelets from sticking together.

Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include dizziness, stomach discomfort, headache and rash. Diarrhea, vomiting, flushing and itching have also been reported. Contact a doctor if you develop chest pain, unusual bleeding, a racing or pounding heartbeat, or symptoms of low blood pressure such as feeling faint. Rare serious reactions include liver problems, including hepatitis, and a low platelet count, which can increase bleeding risk. Increased bleeding during or after surgery has also been reported rarely. Seek urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. Other rarely reported side effects include tiredness, feeling unwell, muscle pain, joint inflammation, nausea, indigestion, tingling, hair loss and gallstones.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Persantine if you are allergic to dipyridamole or any of the other ingredients.
Interactions
Dipyridamole can increase the heart and blood vessel effects of adenosine and regadenoson, medicines used during some cardiac stress tests. Tell the testing team you take dipyridamole before a stress test, as it may need to be temporarily withheld to reduce the risk of cardiovascular side effects. Follow their instructions rather than stopping it yourself. Dipyridamole may reduce the effect of cholinesterase inhibitors and could worsen myasthenia gravis. Tell your doctor if you take these medicines.
