About Pyridium
Overview
Pyridium contains phenazopyridine hydrochloride, a medicine for relief of urinary tract pain and discomfort. It relieves burning, urgency, frequent urination and other discomfort caused by irritation of the lower urinary tract, including irritation from infection, injury, surgery or catheter use. It works by acting locally in the urinary tract to relieve pain. It does not replace treatment of the underlying cause, and symptom relief should not delay diagnosis or treatment.
What it treats
- Relief of pain, burning, urgency, frequent urination and other discomfort caused by lower urinary tract irritation from infection, injury, surgery, endoscopic procedures or the passage of urinary instruments or catheters. - Symptom relief only; it does not replace treatment of the underlying cause. When used for a urinary tract infection, treatment should not exceed 2 days.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, and discoloration of the skin or body fluids. The label does not state how common these are. Serious reported effects that warrant prompt medical attention include severe allergic reactions, liver inflammation linked to hypersensitivity, vision changes, kidney stones, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), and aseptic meningitis. Kidney and liver toxicity have also been reported, usually with overdose. Serious blood disorders include hemolytic anemia (breakdown of red blood cells), methemoglobinemia and sulfhemoglobinemia, which affect the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Phenazopyridine may cause red blood cell breakdown in people with G6PD deficiency.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Pyridium if you are allergic to phenazopyridine hydrochloride or any of its ingredients, or if you have impaired kidney function, severe liver disease, severe hepatitis, or a kidney infection during pregnancy (pyelonephritis of pregnancy). Use with caution if you have stomach or intestinal problems.
Interactions
Interactions between phenazopyridine hydrochloride and other medicines have not been studied systematically. The label states that no significant interactions have been reported in the medical literature to date.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
