About Reminyl

Overview

Reminyl is a prescription medicine containing galantamine as the hydrobromide salt. It is used to treat mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. It is thought to work by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical involved in communication between nerve cells in the brain. There is no evidence that it changes the course of the underlying disease.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache and decreased appetite. Serious side effects include severe skin reactions, a slow heartbeat or problems with the heart’s electrical conduction, bleeding in the stomach or intestines, and difficulty passing urine due to blocked bladder outflow. Stop taking the medicine at the first sign of a skin rash and contact a doctor. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop signs of these other serious effects or breathing problems, particularly if you have a history of severe asthma or obstructive lung disease. The label also reports deaths in people with mild cognitive impairment.

When to call your doctor

• Stop taking galantamine and seek medical attention immediately if a skin rash appears. • Seek immediate medical attention for a very slow heartbeat. • Seek immediate medical attention for bleeding from the stomach or intestines. • Seek immediate medical attention if you cannot pass urine. • Seek immediate medical attention for breathing difficulties, especially if you have severe asthma or obstructive lung disease.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Reminyl if you have a known allergy to galantamine hydrobromide or any of the tablet’s other ingredients. Conditions requiring caution include: - Heart conduction problems: all patients are considered at risk of a slow heartbeat or heart block. - Stomach or intestinal bleeding: monitoring is needed, especially if you are at increased risk of ulcers. - Difficulty emptying the bladder: galantamine may cause obstruction to urine flow from the bladder. - A history of severe asthma or obstructive lung disease: monitoring for breathing-related side effects is needed. - Pregnancy: animal studies suggest galantamine may harm an unborn baby. Stop taking Reminyl at the first sign of a skin rash because serious skin reactions can occur.

Interactions

Galantamine may interfere with the effects of anticholinergic medicines. It may also increase the effects of succinylcholine, similar medicines used to relax muscles, other cholinesterase inhibitors or cholinergic agonists when used together. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.

Storage
