About Uptravi

Overview

Uptravi tablets contain selexipag, a prostacyclin receptor agonist used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I). In adults, it is used to delay disease progression and reduce the risk of hospitalization for PAH. In children aged 2 years and older, it lowers a marker called NT-proBNP and is expected to delay disease progression and reduce the risk of hospitalization for PAH. It works by activating specific targets in the body called prostacyclin receptors.

What it treats

- Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I) in adults, to delay disease progression and reduce the risk of hospitalization for PAH. - PAH (WHO Group I) in children aged 2 years and older. It reduces NT-proBNP and is expected to delay disease progression and reduce the risk of hospitalization for PAH.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, jaw pain, nausea, muscle pain, vomiting, pain in the arms or legs, and flushing. Abdominal pain is also a common side effect in children. A serious risk is pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs) in people with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, a condition affecting the veins in the lungs. Contact a doctor immediately if pulmonary edema is suspected. If confirmed, treatment must be stopped.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema), especially if you have pulmonary veno-occlusive disease.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Uptravi if you are allergic to selexipag or any of its other ingredients, or if you are taking a strong CYP2C8 inhibitor, such as gemfibrozil. Avoid use in people with severe liver impairment. Uptravi may cause fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema) in people with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease. If this condition is confirmed, treatment must be stopped. If you are breastfeeding, either Uptravi or breastfeeding must be stopped. Discuss this with your prescriber.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take clopidogrel, deferasirox or teriflunomide, which can increase levels of Uptravi’s active metabolite in the body. Rifampin can lower these levels. Your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment if you take any of these medicines.

Storage
