About Varivax
Overview
Varivax is a live, weakened varicella virus vaccine containing the Oka/Merck strain, supplied in a vial. It is used to help prevent varicella (chickenpox) in people aged 12 months and older. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies and activate immune cells against the varicella-zoster virus.
What it treats
Prevention of varicella (chickenpox) in individuals 12 months of age and older.
Safety information
Side effects
Commonly reported side effects include fever and reactions at the injection site. In children aged 1–12 years, fever was reported in 14.7% and injection-site reactions in 19.3%. In adolescents and adults aged 13 years and older, fever was reported in 10.2% and injection-site reactions in 24.4%. The fever threshold used differed between these age groups. A chickenpox-like rash has also been reported, either around the injection site or elsewhere on the body.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive Varivax if you: • Have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous varicella vaccine or any ingredient in this vaccine, including neomycin or gelatin. • Have a suppressed immune system. • Have a moderate or severe illness with fever. • Have active, untreated tuberculosis. • Are pregnant. Avoid pregnancy for 3 months after vaccination. If you have a family history of an inherited immune deficiency, your immune function should be assessed before vaccination. After vaccination, avoid close contact with people who are at high risk of complications from chickenpox and are not immune to it, because the vaccine virus may spread to them. Immune globulins and other blood products should not be given at the same time as Varivax. Children and adolescents should avoid salicylates for 6 weeks after vaccination.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about salicylate use, particularly in children and adolescents. Reye syndrome has been reported in children and adolescents who used salicylates during infection with naturally occurring chickenpox. Immune globulins and other blood products given at the same time as Varivax may interfere with the expected immune response. If you are due to have a PPD tuberculin skin test, tell your doctor about Varivax vaccination, as it may temporarily reduce skin sensitivity to the test.
