About Adacel
Overview
Adacel is a vaccine used as a booster to help protect people aged 10 through 64 years against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). It is also indicated for use during the third trimester of pregnancy to help prevent whooping cough in infants younger than 2 months. It contains inactivated tetanus and diphtheria toxins and selected pertussis components that stimulate the body’s immune response.
What it treats
- Booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) in people aged 10 through 64 years. - Immunization during the third trimester of pregnancy to prevent pertussis in infants younger than 2 months.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Adacel include pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, body or muscle aches, muscle weakness, tiredness and feeling generally unwell. Fainting can occur after vaccination and may lead to injury; contact a healthcare professional if this happens. Before vaccination, tell your doctor if you have: • Had Guillain-Barré syndrome within six weeks of a previous tetanus-containing vaccine, as Adacel may increase the risk of it happening again. • Had an Arthus-type reaction, a type of hypersensitivity reaction, after a previous tetanus-containing vaccine. • A progressive or unstable neurological condition, which is a reason to delay vaccination.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive Adacel if you have had a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to any of its components or to another vaccine containing diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid or pertussis antigens. It must also not be given if you developed encephalopathy, such as coma, reduced consciousness or prolonged seizures, within 7 days of a previous pertussis-containing vaccine. Tell your healthcare professional if you developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine, as Adacel may increase the risk of it occurring again. Vaccination should be postponed if you have a progressive or unstable neurological condition. If you have had an Arthus-type hypersensitivity reaction after a tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine, Adacel should not be given until at least 10 years have passed since your last tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine. Fainting can occur with Adacel. Precautions should be in place to prevent injury from falls and manage fainting.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you are receiving treatment that suppresses your immune system, as this may reduce your immune response to Adacel. In adults aged 19–64, receiving Adacel at the same time as a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine led to a lower antibody response to pertactin, one of Adacel’s whooping cough components, compared with receiving Adacel alone. Adacel must not be mixed with any other vaccine in the same syringe or vial.
