About Menactra
Overview
Menactra is a vaccine used to help prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis groups A, C, Y and W-135. It is approved for people aged 9 months through 55 years and does not prevent meningococcal group B disease. It works by stimulating the body to produce antibodies that kill meningococcal bacteria from these four groups.
What it treats
- Prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis groups A, C, Y and W-135 in people aged 9 months through 55 years. Menactra does not prevent meningococcal group B disease.

Side effects
Common side effects vary by age: • Infants and toddlers aged 9 and 12 months: tenderness, redness or swelling at the injection site; irritability, unusual crying, drowsiness, reduced appetite, vomiting and fever. • People aged 2–55 years: pain, redness, hardening or swelling at the injection site; reduced appetite and diarrhea. • Children aged 2–10 years: irritability and drowsiness are also common. • People aged 11–55 years: headache, tiredness, feeling generally unwell and joint pain are also common. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a serious concern for people who have previously been diagnosed with it, as they may have an increased risk of GBS after receiving Menactra. If you have a history of GBS, contact your doctor before vaccination to discuss the potential benefits and risks.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive Menactra if you have had a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to any of its components or after a previous vaccine containing meningococcal capsular polysaccharide, diphtheria toxoid or CRM197. Tell your prescriber if you have previously been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). You may be at increased risk of GBS after Menactra, so the potential benefits and risks should be considered before vaccination. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children younger than 9 months, adults older than 55 years, pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about planned vaccinations, particularly DAPTACEL (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine) and Prevnar (PCV7, a pneumococcal vaccine). In children aged 4–6 years, the timing of DAPTACEL relative to Menactra can affect the antibody response to Menactra. Giving Menactra together with Prevnar (PCV7) may reduce antibody responses to some pneumococcal types. Your doctor should plan the timing of these vaccinations.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
