About Minirin, DDAVP

Overview

Desmopressin nasal spray is a synthetic version of vasopressin, a natural hormone that helps the kidneys conserve water. It is used as hormone replacement treatment for central diabetes insipidus in adults and children aged 4 years and older. It works by helping the kidneys reabsorb more water, reducing urine production. This nasal spray is not indicated for primary bedwetting or nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Side effects

Reported side effects of desmopressin nasal spray include headache, a blocked or inflamed nose, nosebleeds, sore throat, cough, upper respiratory infections, nausea, flushing, mild abdominal cramps and increased blood pressure. How often these occur cannot be reliably estimated from the reports. Serious reactions include water intoxication with low blood sodium (hyponatremia), seizures associated with low sodium, and severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. These require urgent medical attention. Seizures associated with low sodium have been reported when desmopressin was used with oxybutynin or imipramine. Follow your prescriber’s instructions about restricting fluids. Blood sodium monitoring may be needed.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use desmopressin nasal spray if you are allergic to desmopressin acetate or any ingredient in the spray, have kidney impairment with a creatinine clearance below 50 mL/min, or have low blood sodium (hyponatremia) or a history of it. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Follow your prescriber’s instructions on limiting fluid intake to help prevent low blood sodium and water intoxication. Blood sodium monitoring may be needed. Careful fluid restriction is particularly important for children and older adults; older adults also need careful kidney function monitoring. Abnormalities of the nasal lining may affect absorption during long-term use. Your prescriber may need to change your treatment if this occurs.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about any medicines you take that increase the risk of low blood sodium (hyponatremia). Using them with desmopressin nasal spray requires more frequent blood sodium checks. Medicines that narrow blood vessels (vasoconstrictors) may raise blood pressure when used with desmopressin nasal spray. Your doctor may need to adjust your prescription.

Storage
