About Nexlizet
Overview
Nexlizet is a prescription tablet containing bempedoic acid and ezetimibe. It is used alongside diet and exercise to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults with high cholesterol, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition. It works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver and cholesterol absorption in the intestine.
What it treats
- High LDL cholesterol in adults, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), alongside diet and exercise. - The bempedoic acid component is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke or procedures to restore blood flow to the heart in adults at increased risk who cannot take recommended statin therapy, including those not taking a statin.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, muscle spasms, raised uric acid levels, back pain, abdominal pain or discomfort, bronchitis, pain in the arms or legs, anemia, raised liver enzymes, diarrhea, joint pain, sinusitis, tiredness and flu. Kidney problems, gout and gallstones were also common side effects reported in a cardiovascular outcomes trial of bempedoic acid, one of Nexlizet’s ingredients. Serious side effects include raised uric acid levels and tendon rupture. Contact your doctor if you develop signs or symptoms of high uric acid or gout. Your doctor may check your uric acid levels and prescribe treatment if needed. Stop taking Nexlizet and contact your doctor immediately at the first sign of tendon rupture. Nexlizet should be avoided if you have a history of tendon disorders or tendon rupture.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Nexlizet if you have had an allergic reaction to bempedoic acid, ezetimibe or any other ingredient in the medicine. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling, rash and hives, have been reported. Nexlizet should be avoided if you have a history of tendon disorders or tendon rupture. Stop taking it at the first sign of tendon rupture. Nexlizet can raise uric acid levels. Your clinician may check these levels periodically, monitor for signs and symptoms, and prescribe treatment to lower uric acid if needed. Nexlizet may harm an unborn baby. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take simvastatin, pravastatin, cyclosporine, a fibrate such as fenofibrate, or cholestyramine or another bile acid sequestrant. Nexlizet can increase simvastatin and pravastatin levels, raising the risk of muscle damage. Higher doses of these statins should be avoided with Nexlizet; your prescriber should review your treatment. Cyclosporine and Nexlizet can increase each other’s levels, specifically cyclosporine and the ezetimibe component of Nexlizet. The increase in ezetimibe may be greater in people with severe kidney impairment. Your doctor should monitor cyclosporine levels and weigh the benefits and risks of using them together. Fenofibrate with Nexlizet may increase the risk of gallstones. If gallstones are suspected, gallbladder testing and an alternative cholesterol-lowering treatment may be needed. Fibrates other than fenofibrate are not recommended with Nexlizet. Fibrates can also increase triglycerides and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol when used with Nexlizet. Your doctor should monitor these levels and may stop one of the medicines if these changes occur. Cholestyramine can reduce ezetimibe levels and make Nexlizet less effective. Your prescriber should advise you on using Nexlizet with bile acid sequestrants.

Store below 25°C in a dry place with the bottle tightly closed, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
