About Vascepa
Overview
Vascepa capsules contain icosapent ethyl, a form of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA. It is used alongside the highest tolerated statin treatment to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, procedures to restore blood flow to the heart, and unstable angina requiring hospital care in adults with triglycerides of at least 150 mg/dL who have cardiovascular disease, or diabetes and at least two additional cardiovascular risk factors. It is also used alongside diet to lower severely elevated triglycerides of at least 500 mg/dL in adults. It appears to reduce the liver’s production or release of triglycerides and help clear them from the blood, although how it reduces cardiovascular events is not fully understood.
What it treats
• To reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, procedures to restore blood flow to the heart, and unstable angina requiring hospital admission in adults with triglycerides of at least 150 mg/dL who have established cardiovascular disease, or diabetes and at least two additional cardiovascular risk factors. Used alongside the highest tolerated statin therapy. • To lower severely elevated triglycerides (at least 500 mg/dL) in adults, alongside diet. Its effect on pancreatitis risk in people with severely elevated triglycerides has not been determined.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include muscle, bone or joint pain, swelling in the arms or legs, constipation, gout, throat pain, and atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat. Vascepa is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter requiring hospital treatment. These heart rhythm problems occurred more often in people with a previous history of them. Contact a doctor if you develop an irregular heartbeat. Vascepa also increases the risk of bleeding, particularly when taken with medicines such as aspirin, clopidogrel or warfarin. Contact a doctor if bleeding occurs. Vascepa contains an omega-3 fatty acid obtained from fish oil. It is not known whether people with fish or shellfish allergies have a higher risk of an allergic reaction. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop taking Vascepa and seek medical attention.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Vascepa if you have a known allergy to Vascepa or any of its ingredients, including a previous severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Tell your prescriber if you have a history of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Vascepa is associated with an increased risk of these heart rhythm problems requiring hospital care, particularly in people who have had them before. If you are allergic to fish or shellfish, discuss this with your prescriber. Vascepa contains a substance derived from fish oil, but it is not known whether fish or shellfish allergies increase the risk of an allergic reaction. Stop taking Vascepa and seek medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs. Vascepa increases the risk of bleeding, especially when taken with medicines such as aspirin, clopidogrel or warfarin. Tell your prescriber if you take any of these medicines.
Interactions
Taking Vascepa with anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet medicines may increase the risk of bleeding. Tell your doctor if you take these medicines. Your doctor should monitor you for bleeding if they are used together.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
