About Livalo
Overview
Livalo contains pitavastatin, a statin medicine taken as a tablet. It is used alongside diet to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidemia. It is also used alongside diet in adults and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). It works by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol, helping the liver remove more LDL cholesterol from the blood.
What it treats
- Primary hyperlipidemia in adults, used alongside diet to lower LDL cholesterol. - Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) in adults and children aged 8 years and older, used alongside diet to lower LDL cholesterol.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include muscle pain, constipation, diarrhea, back pain, and pain in the arms or legs. Serious side effects include muscle damage and breakdown (myopathy and rhabdomyolysis), which can lead to kidney failure. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. A rare autoimmune muscle condition called immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy has also been reported. Liver enzyme increases and rare cases of liver failure, including fatal cases, have occurred. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes. Increases in blood sugar and HbA1c, a measure of blood sugar over time, can also occur.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Livalo if you take cyclosporine, have acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis, or are allergic to pitavastatin or any of its ingredients. Reported allergic reactions include swelling under the skin, rash, itching and hives. Livalo can cause muscle injury, including serious muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure. The risk is higher in people aged 65 or older, those with uncontrolled hypothyroidism or kidney impairment, and those taking certain other medicines. Higher doses also increase this risk. Promptly report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. A rare autoimmune muscle condition has also been reported. Livalo can increase liver enzymes, and rare cases of liver failure have occurred. Your prescriber may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Seek medical advice promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes. Livalo may harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Interactions
Livalo can interact with medicines that increase the risk of muscle injury, including severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). Do not take Livalo with cyclosporine. Gemfibrozil should also be avoided with Livalo. Tell your doctor if you take erythromycin or rifampin, as these increase pitavastatin exposure and require your prescriber to limit your Livalo dose. Other fibrates, niacin used to lower blood fats, and colchicine can also increase the risk of muscle injury when taken with Livalo. Your doctor should weigh the benefits and risks before combining these treatments.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
