About PREVNAR 20
Overview
Prevnar 20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine used to help prevent invasive disease caused by 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria in people aged 6 weeks and older. It is also used to help prevent middle ear infections caused by seven specific types in children aged 6 weeks through 5 years, and pneumonia caused by all 20 types in adults aged 18 years and older. For seven types, approval for preventing adult pneumonia was granted under accelerated approval based on immune responses; continued approval may depend on confirmation of clinical benefit. It works by stimulating antibodies that help the immune system kill the pneumococcal bacteria covered by the vaccine.
What it treats
Prevention of invasive disease caused by the 20 Streptococcus pneumoniae types covered by the vaccine in people aged 6 weeks and older. Prevention of middle ear infection (otitis media) caused by seven specific Streptococcus pneumoniae types in children aged 6 weeks through 5 years. Prevention of pneumonia caused by the 20 covered Streptococcus pneumoniae types in adults aged 18 years and older. For seven of these types, approval is accelerated and based on measured immune responses; continued approval may depend on confirmation of clinical benefit.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects vary by age. In infants and children, they include pain, redness or swelling at the injection site. Infants and children younger than 2 years may also have irritability, drowsiness, decreased appetite and fever. Children aged 2 years and older may have fatigue and muscle pain; those aged 5 years and older may also have headache. In adults, common side effects include injection site pain, muscle pain, fatigue, headache and joint pain. Injection site swelling is also common in adults aged 18–59 years. Pauses in breathing (apnea) have been observed in some infants born prematurely after vaccination into a muscle. Seek urgent medical help if an infant has pauses in breathing.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Prevnar 20 must not be given to anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to any of its components or to diphtheria toxoid. Pauses in breathing (apnea) have been observed in some infants born prematurely after vaccination into a muscle. For these infants, the clinician should decide when to vaccinate based on the infant’s medical condition and the potential benefits and risks.

Storage
