Before taking this medicine

ProQuad must not be given to anyone who is allergic to any vaccine component, has a suppressed immune system, has a moderate or severe illness with fever, has active untreated tuberculosis, or is pregnant. Pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months after vaccination. Extra caution is needed in children with a personal or family history of fever-related seizures, a history of anaphylaxis or an immediate allergic reaction after eating eggs, or a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Immune function should be assessed before vaccination if there is a family history of an inherited immune deficiency. In previously unvaccinated children aged 12 to 23 months with no history of measles, mumps, rubella or varicella infection, the first ProQuad vaccination is associated with more fever and fever-related seizures 5 to 12 days afterwards than M-M-R II and VARIVAX given separately. Immune globulins and other blood products should not be given at the same time as ProQuad. Avoid salicylates for 6 weeks after vaccination. Avoid close contact with people at high risk who are susceptible to varicella (chickenpox), because the vaccine’s varicella virus may be transmitted to them.
