About Lipitor

Overview

Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a prescription statin medicine supplied as tablets. It is used alongside diet to lower LDL cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidemia and in adults and children aged 10 years and older with certain inherited forms of high cholesterol, although some inherited forms may require other cholesterol-lowering treatments. It also reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with coronary heart disease or certain combinations of risk factors. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol.

What it treats

• Reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke and certain other heart-related events in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it, including certain adults with type 2 diabetes. • High LDL cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidemia, alongside diet. • Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children aged 10 years and older, alongside diet. • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children aged 10 years and older, with other LDL-lowering treatments or alone if these are unavailable. • Primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and high triglycerides in adults, alongside diet.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include inflammation of the nose and throat, joint pain, diarrhea, pain in the arms or legs, and urinary tract infections. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Lipitor can cause muscle damage, including rhabdomyolysis, a serious breakdown of muscle that can lead to kidney failure. Rare cases of an autoimmune condition that damages muscles have also been reported. Lipitor can cause increased liver enzymes and, rarely, liver failure, including fatal cases. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes. Your doctor may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Increases in blood sugar and HbA1c, a measure of longer-term blood sugar levels, have also been reported.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. - Seek medical attention immediately for yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Lipitor if you have acute liver failure, decompensated cirrhosis, or an allergy to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in Lipitor. Serious allergic reactions have been reported, including anaphylaxis, swelling and severe skin reactions. Extra caution is needed if you are aged 65 or older, have uncontrolled hypothyroidism or kidney impairment, or take certain other medicines. These factors, and higher doses of Lipitor, increase the risk of muscle injury, including muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure. Promptly report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Rare autoimmune muscle disease has also been reported. Lipitor can raise liver enzyme levels, and rare cases of liver failure have occurred. Your prescriber may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Serious liver injury, including jaundice, requires prompt discontinuation by your prescriber. Lipitor may harm an unborn baby. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Some medicines and grapefruit juice can increase the risk of muscle injury or serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with Lipitor. Tell your doctor if you take cyclosporine, clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, letermovir or diltiazem. Also mention antiviral treatments, including glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, elbasvir/grazoprevir, tipranavir/ritonavir, saquinavir/ritonavir, darunavir/ritonavir, fosamprenavir, nelfinavir, telaprevir, simeprevir or boceprevir. These medicines can increase atorvastatin levels in the blood. Grapefruit juice can also increase atorvastatin levels, with larger increases reported after excessive consumption. Discuss grapefruit juice intake with your doctor. Other interactions to raise include: • Rifampin: can lower atorvastatin levels. The timing of these medicines matters, so ask your prescriber how to take them together. • Efavirenz, colestipol and Maalox TC antacid: can reduce atorvastatin levels. • Gemfibrozil and fenofibrate: are included in the label’s interaction studies; let your doctor know if you take either. • Digoxin: Lipitor can increase digoxin levels, so appropriate monitoring is needed. • Oral contraceptives containing norethindrone or ethinyl estradiol: Lipitor can increase these hormone levels. Your prescriber should consider this when selecting an oral contraceptive.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
