About Tricor
Overview
Tricor contains fenofibrate, a medicine that helps regulate cholesterol and other fats in the blood. It is used alongside diet in adults with high cholesterol, mixed cholesterol and triglyceride problems, or severely elevated triglycerides. It works by activating a protein called PPARα, which helps the body break down and clear triglyceride-rich particles and increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol. Fenofibrate has not been shown to reduce coronary heart disease complications or deaths in people with type 2 diabetes.
What it treats
- Primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia in adults, alongside diet, to lower elevated LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B, and raise HDL cholesterol. - Severe hypertriglyceridemia (very high triglyceride levels) in adults, alongside diet.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include abnormal liver blood tests, raised liver enzymes (AST and ALT), increased CPK (a muscle enzyme), and rhinitis (inflammation inside the nose). Serious muscle injury, including muscle breakdown called rhabdomyolysis, has been reported with fenofibrate. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop muscle problems. The risk is higher when fenofibrate is taken with a statin, particularly in older people and those with diabetes, kidney failure or an underactive thyroid. Other important risks include gallstones and bleeding complications when taken with oral coumarin blood thinners. Contact your doctor if you experience bleeding or have concerns about these effects. Tricor can also raise blood creatinine, a marker used to assess kidney function; this increase can be reversible. Severe decreases in HDL (“good”) cholesterol have also been reported, although their clinical significance is unknown. Your doctor should check liver tests periodically, monitor kidney function if you have kidney impairment, and check HDL cholesterol within the first few months of treatment. If HDL falls severely, the label recommends stopping treatment under medical supervision, monitoring until it returns to baseline, and not restarting fibrate treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Tricor (fenofibrate) if you have severe kidney impairment, including if you receive dialysis; active liver disease, including primary biliary cirrhosis or persistent unexplained abnormal liver tests; existing gallbladder disease; or a known allergy to fenofibrate or fenofibric acid. Do not take it while breastfeeding. Extra caution is needed in older adults and people with diabetes, kidney impairment or an underactive thyroid because of the risk of muscle injury, including severe muscle breakdown. Taking a statin alongside fenofibrate increases this risk. Mild to moderate kidney impairment requires the prescriber to adjust treatment, and kidney function should be monitored. Treatment decisions in older adults should take kidney function into account. Fenofibrate can raise liver enzymes and blood creatinine levels and increase the risk of gallstones. Liver tests should be checked periodically. Taking it with an oral coumarin anticoagulant requires close blood-clotting monitoring to help prevent bleeding. Severe decreases in HDL (“good”) cholesterol have been reported. HDL should be checked within the first few months of treatment. If it becomes severely low, the prescriber should stop fenofibrate, monitor HDL until it returns to its previous level, and not restart treatment.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take a coumarin anticoagulant (a blood thinner), an immunosuppressant or a bile acid resin. Also tell your doctor if you take colchicine. Taking it with fenofibrate has been linked to muscle problems, including rhabdomyolysis, a serious breakdown of muscle tissue. This combination requires caution.
