About Liptruzet

Overview

Liptruzet is a prescription medicine containing ezetimibe and atorvastatin. It is used alongside dietary changes to lower elevated cholesterol, including LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Ezetimibe reduces cholesterol absorption in the intestine, while atorvastatin reduces the amount of cholesterol made by the liver.

What it treats

Primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), including inherited and non-inherited forms, alongside dietary measures. Mixed hyperlipidemia (raised cholesterol and triglycerides), alongside dietary measures. Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a severe inherited form of high cholesterol, alongside other cholesterol-lowering treatments.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include diarrhoea, muscle aches, joint pain and pain in the arms or legs. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever, feeling unwell or dark urine. These can be signs of serious muscle damage that may affect the kidneys. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or upper abdominal pain may indicate liver problems and also need prompt medical attention. Seek emergency medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

When to call your doctor

• Seek immediate medical attention for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever, unusual tiredness or dark urine. • Seek immediate medical attention for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or severe upper abdominal pain. • Get emergency help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. • Seek immediate medical attention for a severe rash with blistering or peeling skin, or sores in the mouth.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Liptruzet if you are allergic to ezetimibe, atorvastatin or any tablet ingredient, or if you have active liver disease or persistently raised liver enzymes without an identified cause. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are planning pregnancy or become pregnant during treatment, contact your prescriber. Extra caution is needed if you have a history of liver problems, drink substantial amounts of alcohol, have kidney problems or an underactive thyroid, or have had muscle problems with cholesterol-lowering medicines. Other medicines can increase the risk of serious muscle injury, including certain antibiotics, antifungals, antiviral medicines, ciclosporin and other cholesterol-lowering treatments. Your prescriber should review all medicines and supplements you take; some combinations must be avoided.

Interactions

Liptruzet can interact with medicines that increase atorvastatin levels or add to its effects on muscles. Tell your doctor if you take ciclosporin (cyclosporine), gemfibrozil or other fibrates, niacin supplements, colchicine, certain antibiotics such as clarithromycin, antifungals such as itraconazole, or some HIV or hepatitis C treatments. These combinations may increase the risk of muscle injury, and some should be avoided. Also raise the following with your doctor: - Cholestyramine and other bile acid sequestrants can reduce ezetimibe absorption. Your doctor may need to separate their administration from Liptruzet. - Warfarin and similar blood thinners may require closer blood-clotting monitoring. - Digoxin levels can increase, so monitoring may be needed. - Rifampicin can alter atorvastatin levels and affect treatment. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase atorvastatin levels and the risk of side effects. Ask your doctor about avoiding them. Discuss alcohol use, particularly heavy drinking, because of liver-related concerns. Have your doctor or pharmacist review all prescription medicines, non-prescription products and supplements before starting or stopping them.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
