About Pravachol

Overview

Pravachol contains pravastatin, a statin medicine. It is used alongside diet to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidemia and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition causing high cholesterol. It is also used to treat certain other blood fat disorders in adults and to reduce the risk of heart attack and certain other cardiovascular problems in adults with elevated LDL cholesterol or established coronary heart disease. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol.

What it treats

- High LDL cholesterol in adults, alongside diet. - Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (an inherited cause of high cholesterol) in children aged 8 years and older, alongside diet. - High triglycerides and primary dysbetalipoproteinemia (a blood fat disorder) in adults, alongside diet. - Reduction of heart attack risk, need for procedures to restore blood flow to the heart, and cardiovascular death in adults with elevated LDL cholesterol but no clinically evident coronary heart disease. - Reduction of coronary death, heart attack, stroke or transient ischemic attack risk, and need for procedures to restore blood flow to the heart in adults with established coronary heart disease; also used to slow fatty plaque buildup in the coronary arteries.

Safety information

Side effects

Commonly reported side effects include muscle or joint pain, nausea or vomiting, upper respiratory infection, diarrhoea and headache. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling generally unwell. These may be signs of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, serious muscle damage that can lead to kidney failure. Rare cases of an autoimmune condition that damages muscles, called immune-mediated necrotising myopathy, have also been reported. Pravastatin can increase liver enzyme levels. Rare cases of liver failure, including fatal cases, have been reported. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Your doctor may check liver enzymes before treatment and when needed during treatment. Increases in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c, a measure of longer-term blood sugar levels, can also occur.

- Seek medical attention immediately for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling generally unwell. - Seek medical attention immediately for yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Pravachol (pravastatin) if you are allergic to pravastatin or any ingredient in the tablets, or if you have acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis (advanced liver disease). Extra caution is needed if you are aged 65 or older, have uncontrolled hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) or kidney impairment, or take certain other medicines. These factors, and higher pravastatin doses, increase the risk of muscle injury, including serious muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure. Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness promptly, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Rare autoimmune muscle disease has also been reported. Pravastatin can raise liver enzyme levels, and rare cases of liver failure have occurred. Your prescriber may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Serious liver injury or suspected muscle disease may require treatment to be stopped. Treatment may also need to be paused during a serious acute illness that increases the risk of kidney failure from muscle breakdown. Pravastatin may harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Some medicines can increase the risk of muscle problems (myopathy), including serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), when taken with pravastatin. Tell your doctor about your other medicines, especially bile acid sequestrants, which need to be taken separately from pravastatin. Ask your doctor how to space them apart.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
