About Praluent

Overview

Praluent contains alirocumab, a PCSK9 inhibitor given as an injection under the skin using a pre-filled pen. It is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, death from coronary heart disease, or unstable angina requiring hospital care in adults at increased risk. Alongside diet and exercise, it lowers LDL cholesterol in adults with high cholesterol, adults and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It blocks a protein called PCSK9, helping the liver remove more LDL cholesterol from the blood.

What it treats

- Reducing the risk of coronary heart disease death, heart attack, stroke, or unstable angina requiring hospitalisation in adults at increased risk. - Lowering LDL cholesterol alongside diet and exercise in adults with high cholesterol. - Lowering LDL cholesterol alongside diet and exercise in adults and children aged 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). - Lowering LDL cholesterol alongside diet and exercise in adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH).

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include injection site reactions and flu in adults with primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), and muscle pain in adults with established cardiovascular disease. Serious allergic reactions have been reported, including inflammation of blood vessels caused by an allergic reaction (hypersensitivity vasculitis), swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), and other allergic reactions requiring hospitalization. Stop using Praluent and seek urgent medical attention if signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction occur.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, which may signal a serious allergic reaction.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Praluent if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to alirocumab or any of its other ingredients. Serious allergic reactions have been reported, including allergic inflammation of blood vessels (hypersensitivity vasculitis), swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), and reactions requiring hospital treatment. If signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction occur, stop using Praluent and seek urgent medical care. Treatment and monitoring are needed until symptoms resolve.

Storage
