Welchol

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Welchol if you have triglyceride levels above 500 mg/dL, a history of pancreatitis caused by high triglycerides, or a history of bowel obstruction. Welchol can raise triglyceride levels, which can cause acute pancreatitis. Blood fat levels, including triglycerides, should be monitored. Stop taking Welchol and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms of acute pancreatitis occur. Welchol is not recommended for people with delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis), other conditions that slow movement through the digestive tract, or previous major digestive tract surgery that may put them at risk of bowel obstruction. Welchol may reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Extra caution is needed if you are prone to vitamin K or other fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies, including if you take warfarin or have a condition that reduces nutrient absorption. It may also reduce absorption of other medicines. Tell your prescriber about all medicines and vitamin supplements you take so they can advise on timing.
