About Zocor

Overview

Zocor contains simvastatin, a medicine used alongside diet to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and treat certain other blood fat disorders. It is also used for inherited high cholesterol, including with other cholesterol-lowering treatments in adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. In adults at high risk who have certain heart or blood vessel diseases and/or diabetes, it is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, death from coronary heart disease and procedures to restore blood flow. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol.

What it treats

- Reducing the risk of death, heart attack, stroke and procedures to restore blood flow in adults at high risk of coronary heart disease events who have coronary heart disease, disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain or limbs, and/or diabetes. - Lowering LDL cholesterol alongside diet in adults with primary hyperlipidemia and in adults and children aged 10 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. - Lowering LDL cholesterol alongside other LDL-lowering treatments in adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. - Treating primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and high triglycerides in adults, alongside diet.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include upper respiratory infection, headache, abdominal pain, constipation and nausea. Serious side effects include muscle damage (myopathy), severe muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure (rhabdomyolysis), and a rare autoimmune muscle disorder called immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Zocor can increase liver enzymes and has rarely been associated with liver failure, including fatal cases. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Increases in blood sugar and HbA1c, a measure of longer-term blood sugar levels, have also been reported.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor immediately for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling generally unwell. - Contact your doctor immediately if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Zocor if you: • Are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in Zocor. • Have acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis. • Take a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, including certain azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, antiviral medicines or nefazodone. • Take cyclosporine, danazol or gemfibrozil. Zocor can cause muscle injury, including muscle breakdown that may lead to kidney failure. The risk is higher in people aged 65 or older, those with uncontrolled hypothyroidism or kidney impairment, and those taking certain other medicines or higher doses of Zocor. Chinese patients may also be at higher risk. Promptly report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Rare autoimmune muscle disease has also been reported. Zocor can increase liver enzymes, and rare cases of liver failure have occurred. Your prescriber may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Serious liver injury, including jaundice, requires prompt discontinuation. Zocor may harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Other medicines and grapefruit juice can increase the risk of muscle problems, including rhabdomyolysis (serious muscle breakdown), when used with Zocor. Discuss other medicines you take and grapefruit juice with your doctor. If you take a coumarin anticoagulant, your doctor should check your INR (a measure of blood clotting) before you start Zocor and monitor it when treatment starts or changes. If you take digoxin, your doctor should monitor your digoxin levels when you start Zocor.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
